A British television series vividly shows the waste associated with trawling, purse seining and other methods. The news media is rushing to give British consumers advice on sustainable selections, including this article in the Independent by Martin Hickman.
“Some tuna is caught by the pole-and-line method, which does not involve by-catch, but most is caught by purse seine trawlers,” Hickman writes. “The best tip here is to buy pole-and-line caught tuna: easily done at Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose.”
And troll-caught is the best method of all. Of course all St. Jude tuna is troll-caught, as we’ve explained in many discussions of fishing methods before.
