Down at the farm?

We support family-owned, local sources for our food – from the farms or sea. But a new database from the Environmental Working Group delivers quite the shock. Type in a zip code and check out the total farm subsidies delivered between 1995 and 2006.

Then check zips in New York City? Washington DC? Beverly Hills?

This apparently is a government program for those “in the know.” The database also allows searches by congressional district or top beneficiaries of conservation, disaster or commodities funds.

“EWG supports broad-based reform of federal farm policy by expanding
farmland conservation programs to increase assistance especially to the
bottom 90% of farm subsidy recipients as well as those completely left
out of the current system,” the database site notes.

Government subsidies, particularly during hard times, should shape the direction of our communities, nation and the world.

“Of the great harvest I myself desired.
There were ten thousand thousand fruit
to touch,
Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall.” –  Robert Frost, “After Apple Picking”
